More Than Words…

We see what we hear. The optics of our body language is one of the most critical components today in leadership. Why? Because even more than before, we are becoming a visual society and our leadership is extending off and online.  The leader today must be able to use tools like video and other visual methods and it’s important that we know the story the bodies are telling in addition to the words we speak. Our message can be diluted if our body isn’t aligned with us in the intentions we are making as leaders.

What is body language at its core? Its technical term is kinesics. Our lives – personal and profession hinge on our ability to display and read body language.  Within this language, we reveal our truth, emotions and meaning to all. And on the flip side, we read the story we are being told by others in their inflection of voice and reactions with regard to their body.

One the mantras we hear over and over again in leadership discussions are that listening is the critical piece for all leaders. We hear with our ears but also “hear” with our eyes.  It’s not the words that are being communication but it is the non-verbal signals that being exchanged we must able to hear as well.

In the video clip below, I spoke with Kaarina Dillabough during our #bealeader hangout on Monday on the topic of body language in preparation for our #bealeader  Tweetchat  this Thursday, October 18th at 7pmET . I look forward to your comments and conversation at #bealeader this week.
